"The Fifth Angel"

by Tim Green

What it's about:
Prosecuting attorney Jack Ruskin undergoes a dramatic conversion in his life when his fifteen-year-old daughter is tortured and raped. WIth her recovery uncertain, Jack begins his personal crusade against criminals who have committed similar crimes. It's his personal vendettam, and he sets about his revenge with all the knowledge he has acquired as a prosecutor. He can commit murder without leaving evidence and he starts his campaign in earnest.

The opposing side of the story involves Amanda Lee, an FBI agent with a husband snd young children. She's a good agent on her way up the ladder at the Bureau until a botched arrest leaves her reassigned to a seemingly nondescript case involving Jack Ruskin. How these two characters become entwinted is a fascinating tale of murder, revenge, and pursuit.

Why I like it:
Tim Green creates a great "right vs wrong" tale here. Any time you have vigilantes involved, you're going to raise serious questions about moral issues. Yes, this character Jack Ruskin is a good man, essentially pushed to the brink of madness by the cruel acts against his daughter. What parent wouldn't want revenge?

But he methodically goes about hunting down and killing any criminal guilty of these crimes, and no one really wants to stop him, except Amanda. We are forced to admit to ourselves that maybe what he's doing isn't such a bad thing. But of course, it is.

So we get Amanda as a skilled, intuitive FBI agent who has moved to the top of her league, only to lose respect in a case of mistaken identity during the pursuit of a child molester. She tries to rebuild her credibility to the point of alienating her family. Her drive matches that of Jack Ruskin and the parallels in their lives make for intersting reading.

Good guy/bad guy-we are faced with this concept over and over, and the conflict provides tension and suspense throughout the book. The characters are well developed and I found my own loyalties divided. It's a gripping story with excellent levels of excitement and plenty of twists to keep you guessing.

In other words, THIS BOOK ROCKS!
