What it's about:
Charles Schine, a regular family man trying to lead a normal life, is lured into a bizarre relationship with a mysterious woman on his daily train commute. What starts out as a man's innocent fling turns into an unrelenting downward spiral. His life spins out of control and it seems like there's no way for him to get it back. He has to resort to lies, deception, and crime to pull his life back together. What happens and where it all goes make a fascinating story.
Why I like it:
Okay, I swore I would never say this in a review, but I COULDN'T PUT THIS BOOK DOWN. I couldn't stop reading it--it followed me, it haunted me, it taunted me. I tried to do housework , I tried to do other things, but I finally succumbed to the pull of this book. I sat down on my couch and read it straight through. My hands were sweaty and my heart was pounding the entire time. If I wasn't sure it was the books fault, I would have checked into the hospital.
So, aside from all that, was it any good? Oh, yeah. If you read a lot of mysteries, you reach a point where you feel like you've seen it all. Nothing surprises you and plots become secondary to character development or setting. Not here, kids. This book is a wild ride, and if you see the twists coming, you're a better sleuth than I.
James Siegel had created a firebomb of a story, with real characters, complicated plot twists and a series of ups and downs that will leave you dazed. I had a lot of trouble starting a new book after I had finished this one because I couldn't get it out of my mind.
In other words, THIS BOOK ROCKS!
