by Michael Connelly
What it's about:
LAPD detective Harry Bosch has finally retired from the force. But as one might expect, Harry is unable to hang up his badge and quit police work. A four-year-old unsolved murder case has Harry making a new effort to right the wrongs that were made during the investigation.
He and Liz Rider were taken off the case and the new Homicide detectives failed to solve it. One officer was killed and the other was paralyzed. The investigation was halted.
Harry is still haunted by the death of Angella Benton and how the investigation had failed to find her killer. He can't leave it alone. The story takes us through Harry's unrelenting pursuit of the truth as well as his revelations about his own life.
Why I like it:
Lost Light, like all of Michael Connelly's books, can be read as an independent novel. He provides everything a reader needs to know; with an engaging, intricate plot, an interesting setting, and believable characters. He's a skilled storyteller with insider knowledge of the LAPD and also has a keen sense of what it takes to make his characters real. This is a great crime mystery; no excuses.
But there's an added depth and level of appreciation in Lost Light if you've already read Connelly's other books about Harry Bosch. In Lost Light, we see Harry Bosch, a man disgusted with the policies and politics of his Los Angeles Police Department, retiring from that stress and pressure only to find thay he can't keep from being what he has spent his life becoming--an investigator. He simply can't stop trying to solve the crimes that haunt him. We feel his frustration, his humiliation, and his despair. He is almost a man without a country; his former colleagues reluctant to help him, and the rest of the world unwilling to give this badgeless man any respect. His personal battle and his professional one blend together and make for compelling reading.
Michael Connelly has given us another terrific story. It moves with lightning speed, it offers twists, turns, and surprises, and best of all, it teaches us that the light is not lost after all.
