What it's about:
Rookie game warden Joe Pickett finds himself emmeshed in an unusual case set in the wilderness of Montana. The story unfolds with layer after layer of murder, corporate greed, and the future of an endangered species. Joe must solve the obvious murder cases, but also uncover behind what's happening in the bigger scheme of things.
Why I like it:
We meet the young game warden Joe Pickett, and before we even reach the first chapter, we find him being humiliated by a poacher. Joe's made a potentially fatal mistake that no law enforcer should make. It sets the stage for a story filled with countless twists and tension, and takes a fascinating look at a lifestyle in an area most of us have never experienced.
Joe Pickett is a great character; likeable and compassionate. He makes his share of mistakes, like the rest of us, and he never gives up in his quest for answers, even when struggling to provide and care for his family. CJ Box gives Joe a lot of integrity and brains, and makes Joe a real and believable guy.
Vivid descriptions and a well-conceived plot make this a fascinating, fast-paced read. it's an exciting and fulfilling story, one that explores many provacative topics.
